MIKE. Very cold, very elusive. We caught him at his ‘BY THE WATER‘ EP launch at the Peckham Nines last week. Standing next to us in the crowd were King Krule & Cosmo Pyke, along with deep Hip Hop fans from all across the city and beyond. Though his tracks are often moody, MIKE kept the energies up, delivering a memorable show. Following this, he dropped the video for ‘GOD’S WITH ME’, the final track of the EP. Delivered in black and white, the visuals offer a drone’s eye footage of MIKE as he walks through his hood, linking up with various pals along the way. Though it’s a simple concept, the Fons Schiedon directed video matches the atmosphere of the track. If you want flashy lyrics and 808 glides then look elsewhere – MIKE is raw and to the point in both beat (which he produced), and lyrics.
The ever elusive MF DOOM started a new series of releases this week with intense new track ‘Negus’. Featuring a verse from the late Sean Price, the track is a first from a one-a-week-for-fifteen-weeks project in collaboration with Adult Swim. In a statement, the rapper said that the individual tracks correlate with a notebook that disappeared at “the Metalface [Records] L.A. office when DOOM was denied entry into the U.S. seven years ago”.
The new series will (in the words of Jason Demarco) premier “all new DOOM jams” and “all sorts of special guests”. DOOM fans should be drooling at the mouth right now, as it seems there are some interesting times ahead. The series will run until November 14th.
In the meantime, be sure to listen to the posthumous new Sean Price album Imperius Rex as well.
Ontario’s Roy Woods makes his mark on summer 2017 with atmospheric new track ‘What Are You On’. He announced earlier this year that he would be releasing a new album entitled Say Less, and is keeping our appetites whet with the new track. He confirmed on Twitter yesterday that it is the first release from the new album:
Roy’s tracks occupy the space between being moodily sexy and energetic enough to induce a skank, with the new track analysing a fresh girl’s drug habits. Roy is the current master of creating eerie musical landscapes that sound exactly like that 6am feeling when you’re waved thinking about that special someone.
It’s been two years since we last heard any music from Tyler The Creator (that wasn’t a feature, anyway). A week ago, we got a cryptic tweet from Tyler; an image of a bee exclaiming ‘7 DAYS BOY’, with no information on what to expect. The bees then counted us down to midnight Thursday evening, at which we received a batshit crazy new video titled ‘Who Dat Boy’. Without saying too much (you can view it above for yourself), we witness Tyler blowing half his face off in a botched electrical experiment, and then having a white-skinned face transplant conducted by A$AP ROCKY. Yes, it’s lit. The video is self directed (by Tyler’s alter ego Wolf Haley), and lives up to par on the weirdness scale with his other video creations where he eats a cockroach, or is a coked-up transgender centaur.
Shortly after, we also received new track ‘911/Mr Lonely’, which features contributions from Frank Ocean, Steve Lacy and Anna Of The North. You can check that out here. No news on what’s coming next from Tyler, but this is definitely enough to keep us entertained for now.
It’s a north Miami linkup as Prez P and Billy Blue collab on the new visuals for ‘GOING PLACES’. Flexing over a summery smooth instrumental, the pair stunt amid the palm trees with some beautiful ladies in the BloodIsBond video. Crack open a cold beer when the sun is shining and listen in above.
Disclaimer: anyone who knows me knows how irreparably in love I am with TDE singer SZA. She recently released her newest album CTRL, with track ‘Drew Barrymore’ being the first track that was previewed months ago. She continues the trend, with the track being the first video release as well. It’s directed by Dave Meyers, who also did fellow TDE member Kendrick Lamar’s video for ‘Humble‘. Like the KDOT visuals, this has a cinematic feel, and is akin to a short film as we dive into the party lifestyle of SZA and her crew. Join them as they smoke and drink their way through the seasons in New York City. Oh yeah, and she actually managed to get Drew Barrymore to make an appearance.
CTRL boasts features from Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott & Isaiah Rashad, and is well worth your time and hard earned money. It can be picked up now here.
