Vince Staples – “Lift Me Up” [Video]

“See, this weight is on my shoulders, pray Jehovah lift me up / And my pain is never over, pills and potions fix me up”

Long Beach rapper Vince Staples has cemented his reputation as providing some of the most interesting and intricate videos in Hip Hop at the moment. Whether it’s the glass-window to the hood of “Senorita“, the surrealist floating portal of “Screen Door“, or the noir gang vs police tale of “Norf Norf“, Vince always has something visually interesting to bring to the table. Vince’s latest video is for “Lift Me Up”, taken from his last release Summertime ’06. The Vince of “Lift Me Up” is an individual torn between the needs of his oppressed community and the temptations of capitalism – “Fight between my conscience and the skin that’s on my body, man / I need to fight the power but I need that new Ferrari, man”. He is a character desperate for spiritual guidance, waiting for a higher power to allow him to take flight.
