‘Man I was only 16, nigga with a dream /
Listening to people tell me what I couldn’t be /
Man you so wrong coz your boy grown now /
I don’t give a damn man, I’m going all out’ – Jay Prince, Polaroids
Sure, it’s an extremely tall order, but there are already people out there saying that London’s Jay Prince ‘is what you would get if Kendrick Lamar delved into the Soulection scene’ (Saint Heron). An affiliate of the self-dubbed ‘sound of tomorrow’ providing L.A based record label Soulection, Jay has been steadily on the come up since his Lounge In Paris mixtape which dropped in 2012. His soulful brand of UK rap manages to channel the spirit of golden-age 90s Hip Hop (with nods to the past such as the sampling of R&B princess Aaliyah on his hit-track Polaroids), and melds elements of electronic, funk, jazz, soul and classic hip hop instrumentals with poetic soul-searching and story-sharing lyrics that somehow bridge a gap in being appropriate to either bang in the dance, or chill in your room to on your day off. Having released his masterly project BeFor Our Time almost exactly two months ago, and a new track Good Right Now two days ago, Jay’s next step is his first headline show at Shoreditch’s Red Gallery, bringing along fellow Soulection producer PYRMDPLAZA and London MC Isaac Danquah as support. The show kicks off this Thursday at 7pm, and there are still some last few tickets left for the very agreeable price of £9. Make sure to catch this intimate show before he blows and pick up tickets HERE asap!
